Then FortiMail is layered in front of or alongside the platform's own filtering, and the case rests on catching what the built-in filters miss, which for targeted phishing is a real and measurable gap.
Gateway, transparent or server mode?
Gateway is the usual choice and requires an MX change. Transparent mode drops inline with no MX change, which suits environments where DNS is not yours to alter. Server mode replaces the mail system entirely.
Do you need outbound DLP and encryption?
For regulated data this is often the requirement that justifies the purchase rather than inbound filtering. It changes the sizing and the configuration effort.
