How to read these numbers

FortiManager is the answer to the question every multi-firewall estate eventually asks: how do we make the same change on all of them without making it forty times. Policy packages, object databases, provisioning templates, firmware rollout and a full change-approval workflow with revision history and rollback.

More on choosing within this range

Capacity is quoted in managed devices and VDOMs: 30 on the FMG-200G, 150 on the 410G, 1,000 on the 1000G, 4,000–8,000 on the 3100G, and 10,000–100,000 on the 3750G, with the VM range running from base to unlimited.

For anything regulated, the audit trail is often the purchasing reason on its own, every policy change attributed, timestamped and reversible is exactly what an assessor asks to see.

Before you order

How many devices, counting VDOMs?

The limit is devices and VDOMs together, not chassis. A modest number of firewalls running many VDOMs consumes capacity far faster than the device count suggests.

Do you need it to hold logs too?

FortiManager can take logs, but FortiAnalyzer is the product built for it. Where log volume is meaningful, run both; that is the intended architecture, not an upsell.

Appliance or VM?

The VM is fine and often preferable, but its performance is hardware-dependent, so it needs real resources allocated. An under-provisioned FortiManager VM is a slow FortiManager.

Are you a service provider?

ADOMs give per-customer administrative separation, which is what makes multi-tenant management workable. Say so up front; it changes both sizing and licensing.
