The 70G is the strongest price-performance point in the entry-level range. It sustains 10 Gbps of firewall throughput at all three test frame sizes, 1518, 512 and 64 byte, where the 60F and 70F fall to 6 Gbps at 64 byte, and it doubles SSL inspection to 1.4 Gbps. It manages 96 FortiAPs and offers WiFi and PoE variants.

Where it fits, and where it stops fitting

Compare the whole range

The default recommendation for a new branch build in this tier. It beats the 70F on every inspection metric, adds PoE and WiFi variants the 70F lacks, and handles 100,000 new sessions per second against the 70F's 35,000. The one thing it gives up is published SSL VPN throughput, if local remote-access VPN is required, that pushes you to the 70F or 80F.

Support and subscriptions

What to order alongside the FortiGate 70G

The published threat protection figure for this model is measured with IPS, application control and malware protection all running. Those arrive as a FortiGuard subscription, so the bundle you choose decides whether the hardware can reach the number you sized it on. Every bundle already includes FortiCare Premium 24x7 support.

Which term to pick

Longer terms price better per year, which is why three and five year bundles are usually the better buy on a device you intend to keep through a refresh cycle. Part numbers follow Fortinet’s standard bundled convention; not every model carries every combination, so we confirm the exact orderable SKU before anything is placed.

Where it sits in the range

FortiGate 70G is number 7 of 8 in this family

Ranked on threat protection throughput, the figure that separates these models. All values are Fortinet’s own and cited on each product page.

One step down

FortiGate 50G

1.1 Gbps

18% less than the FortiGate 70G. Worth it only if your measured requirement genuinely fits inside it.

This model

FortiGate 70G

1.3 Gbps

8 models in this family span 500 Mbps to 2.2 Gbps.

One step up

FortiGate 90G

2.2 Gbps

69% more headroom. Worth costing if you expect growth inside the refresh cycle, replacing early is dearer than buying up once.

Highlights

  • 10 Gbps firewall throughput at every tested frame size
  • 1.4 Gbps SSL inspection, 3.6 Gbps application control
  • 100,000 new sessions/sec, nearly 3x the 70F
  • WiFi and PoE variants available

Typical deployments

  • New branch and small-campus builds on gigabit fibre
  • Sites doing meaningful SSL inspection on a small budget
  • Wireless-first small offices via the FortiWiFi 70G variant

Performance

Fortinet's published figures. Firewall throughput is measured on UDP with no inspection enabled, size your deployment on threat protection throughput instead, which is measured with firewall, IPS, application control and malware protection all running against an enterprise traffic mix.
