Is this the right model?

Where it fits, and where it stops fitting

Compare the whole range

The same gigabit access as the 200 series but with 10 Gbps uplinks, which is the whole reason to choose it: a 48-port PoE switch feeding a 1 Gbps uplink will saturate under any real access-point load. If you are deploying WiFi and this switch will carry it, the uplink speed matters more than anything on the access side. Redundant power is available on some models, specify it for a closet that carries a floor.

Sizing this model

How to work out whether it fits

The arithmetic a datasheet leaves out. If any of it does not match your situation, that is worth a call rather than a guess.

Choose this over the 200 series on the uplink and nothing else, the access ports are identical. The arithmetic is simple: eight modern access points on gigabit access ports can generate several gigabits of aggregate traffic, and a 1 Gbps uplink turns the closet into a bottleneck no amount of access-port capacity fixes. If wireless is going through this switch, 10GE uplink is not an upgrade, it is the requirement.

Support and subscriptions

What to order alongside the FortiSwitch 400 Series

The published threat protection figure for this model is measured with IPS, application control and malware protection all running. Those arrive as a FortiGuard subscription, so the bundle you choose decides whether the hardware can reach the number you sized it on. Every bundle already includes FortiCare Premium 24x7 support.

These are Fortinet list prices. You will not pay them.

Every quote we write is discounted from list, and how far below depends on quantity, term and whether we register the deal with Fortinet. Longer terms also price better per year, which is why three and five year bundles are usually the better buy on a device you intend to keep through a refresh cycle. Part numbers follow Fortinet’s standard bundled convention; not every model carries every combination, so we confirm the exact orderable SKU before anything is placed.

Highlights

  • 1 Gbps access, 10 Gbps uplink
  • FortiLink managed, configured from the FortiGate, no controller
  • Switch ports become policy objects the firewall can act on
  • Compact access-layer deployment

Typical deployments

  • Access layer feeding wireless with 10GE back to the core
  • Floors where the access switch is a single point of failure
  • Campus deployments standardising on 10GE aggregation
