The FortiAuthenticator VM provides single sign-on, RADIUS and LDAP authentication, certificate authority services, guest management and 802.1X for wired and wireless access. It supports 100/10 to +10,000/1,000 local and remote users, 33 to +33,333 NAS devices and 200 to +20,000 FortiTokens.
100/10 users up to 10,000+/1,000, scaling by licence rather than by hardware swap. Suitable where the identity platform should live alongside the rest of a virtualised estate, and where growth is expected to be gradual, the licence steps up without a migration.
How to work out whether it fits
The arithmetic a datasheet leaves out. If any of it does not match your situation, that is worth a call rather than a guess.
Licence tiers step from 100/10 users to 10,000+/1,000, so the sizing question is growth rate rather than current count, the point of the VM is that you can move up without a hardware swap. Give it real resources though: authentication is latency-sensitive in a way that logging is not, and a slow RADIUS response looks to users like the network is broken rather than the appliance is busy.
